Report of the Secretary-General on the Implementation of Resolutions CM/Res. 1163 (XLVIII) On Child Survival, Development and Universal Immunization in Africa and CM/Res. 1164 (XLVIII) on the Programme of Essential Medicines for Children and their Mothers or “BAMACO INITIATIVE"

Abstract

In May 1998, during the forty-eighth ordinary session of the Council of Ministers, the OAU adopted resolution CM/Res. 1163 (XLVIII) focused on Child Survival, Development, and Universal Immunization in Africa, highlighting the vital importance of nurturing the continent's future citizens. Concurrently, resolution CM/1154 (XLVIII) was adopted, establishing the Bamako Initiative, which aimed to enhance social mobilization and promote community self-sufficiency in health care for mothers and children through the provision of essential medicines. The actions undertaken by the General Secretariat of the OAU were integral to the implementation of these resolutions, reflecting a commitment to improving health outcomes and ensuring the well-being of vulnerable populations across Africa.
