Abstract

This report examines the implications of recent global geopolitical developments on African Regional Economic Communities (RECs), with a particular focus on the Southern African Development Community (SADC). It highlights the region’s growing concerns over abrupt shifts in United States foreign assistance and the introduction of disruptive trade policies. The analysis details the economic impact of the U.S. decision to pause foreign aid and reduce USAID funding particularly in countries like South Africa, Malawi, and Zambia threatening fiscal stability and undermining critical health initiatives and the calling for urgent, coordinated African responses to mitigate the adverse effects of these external economic shocks and to safeguard regional development gains.
