In 1957 the Commission for Technical Co-operation in Mrica South
of the Sahara (C.C.T.A.) adopted the recommendation of a Specialist
Committee in Economics that an Inventory should be prepared listing all
work relating to Mrica published since 1945 in the field of economics and
that this should be supplemented periodically to incorporate new wo.rk.
This task was entrusted to the Panel of Correspondents in Economics,
each member of which was asked to survey the literature relating to his
own region and to list all works th.ought to be suitable for inclusion. The
task of classification and preparation for publication was u.ndertaken by
the General Editor, Miss Peter Ady, Fellow of St. Anne's College, Oxford,
and Associate Member of the Scientific Council for Mrica (C.S.A.).*
This is not the first Mrican bibliography in the field of economics.
A similar task was undertaken in 1956 by the International Mrican Institute
with a Bibliography concerning the whole field of the social sciences. The
Editors wish to record their gratitude to the International Mrican Institute
for permission to make use of their earlier compilation of material in the
field of economics. They were also fortunate in having the assistance in
the preparation of the section for the British Territories of Mr. Arthur
Hazlewood, who had prepared the I.A.I. Economics List for British
Mrica and who, although not on the Panel, undertook the initial compilation for the British Territories.
