In 2016, the African Union Assembly embarked on a reform journey to enhance the effectiveness and financial stability of the African Union. Significant progress has been made since then, with most of the initiatives outlined in the 2017 report now completed. The African Union Commission, led by Chairperson Moussa Faki, and the Reform Unit, led by Professor Pierre Moukoko, are credited for their dedicated efforts over the past eight years. Notable achievements include the successful revitalization of the Peace Fund, which mobilized nearly $400 million, leading to the United Nations Security Council agreeing to fund three-quarters of African Union peace operations. These accomplishments demonstrate that the African Union is more capable and purpose-driven today. However, there is still much work ahead to strengthen the Union further. The reform process must continue beyond the current mandate, requiring ongoing support from Heads of State to implement institutional reforms and prevent regression to inefficient practices.
