Concept Note on Reparatory Justice and Racial Healing as the African Union Theme of the Year for 2025 Theme: “Building a United Front to Advance the Cause of Justice and the Payment of Reparations to Africans”

Abstract

This concept note discusses the ongoing pursuit of reparatory justice for historical crimes and mass atrocities committed against Africans and People of African Descent. For over the past thirty years, the AU has discussed various decisions and initiatives aimed at promoting justice, advocating for reparations, and facilitating the restitution of cultural artifacts and heritage that were looted during colonization and enslavement in Africa.
