This report details the Programme for Agricultural Management Training for Africa (AMTA), an initiative launched in response to the critical shortage of adequately trained local managerial staff in Africa's agricultural sector during the 1980s. Historically, a heavy reliance on expatriate personnel, coupled with insufficient on the job training for local counterparts, left national staff unprepared to assume full managerial responsibilities. AMTA was designed to address this by focusing on building regional managerial capacities and developing competent indigenous managers and trainers. The program emphasizes improving the management of micro economic development efforts, particularly those involving smallholder participation in agricultural and rural development.
